Chances are, you’ve stumbled across a crafting video on social media. Maybe you saw a knitting tutorial on Youtube or saw a crocheting video on your FYP. Digital platforms are often critiqued for their impact on productivity, social media has emerged as an unexpected benefactor in reviving traditional crafts among the younger generation. A surprising trend has been observed where activities such as quilting, crocheting, and knitting are gaining popularity, driven by the vast resources and communities available online. The reality is that social media is causing a massive resurgence in crafting, especially quilting, crocheting and knitting.

Corey Pearson, a Master Quilter at Linda’s Electric Quilters, has noticed a significant uptick in interest towards quilting, particularly among young adults. “During the pandemic, many people found themselves isolated and bored. So many people took up new hobbies, and that includes quilting. I think that it’s amazing to see so many people, especially in younger generations, want to take up the craft,” shares Corey Pearson, Master Quilter at Linda’s Electric Quilters.

This resurgence is backed by recent research, which reveals that a staggering 72% of adults aged 18-25 have been inspired to take up a new hobby after watching clips on social media platforms. The accessibility of online tutorials, community support, and resources has played a crucial role in this trend. Platforms such as YouTube, Pinterest, and TikTok serve not only as sources of inspiration but also as educational tools, offering step-by-step guides for beginners and advanced crafters alike.

Social media has effectively bridged the gap between traditional crafts and the digital age, enabling enthusiasts to connect with peers worldwide. “It’s all about staying connected, sharing tips, and showing off our latest projects,” Pearson adds. For quilters, whether novices or seasoned veterans, social media platforms offer tons of information, from tutorials to sourcing materials that may not be locally available.

The ease of accessing instructional content and joining virtual guild meetings or classes has democratized learning and participating in these crafts. The blend of traditional hobbies with modern technology not only keeps these practices alive but also fosters a sense of community and shared creativity among users.

“Social media can be an amazing tool for quilters, no matter if you’re just beginning or you’ve been quilting for decades. It allows you to connect quilters from anywhere, with each person bringing different ideas or techniques to the table. Need info or want to dive into some research? Youtube, Pinterest, TikTok and other platforms can help walk you through a step by step guide or give you some inspiration. Online platforms can also provide you with supplies that aren’t necessarily available in your area,” says Pearson.

This digital renaissance of crafting shows a broader trend of social media serving as a tool for positive engagement and learning. As young adults explore these hobbies, they contribute to the preservation and evolution of crafts, ensuring they remain vibrant and relevant in today’s increasingly digital world.
